Proton Privacy Suite Review – VPN, Mail, Passwords, Cloud and Private AI
Proton is more interesting than a conventional VPN provider because its privacy strategy spans several services: encrypted email, VPN, password management, cloud storage and a privacy-focused AI assistant.
Why Proton fits a privacy-focused setup
Our Privacy Exposure Check demonstrates how much information a browser can expose to websites. A VPN can reduce exposure of your public IP address, but browser fingerprinting, cookies, accounts and tracking remain relevant. A serious privacy strategy therefore needs several layers.
Proton applies that philosophy across its product portfolio. Its security model uses concepts such as end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption. Proton Mail protects stored mailbox contents, while Proton Drive encrypts files before they are uploaded.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN hides your public IP address behind a VPN server and adds features such as a kill switch, DNS leak protection, IPv6 protection, WireGuard, OpenVPN, NetShield and Tor over VPN.
Secure Core
Secure Core routes traffic through a hardened Proton-controlled server before the exit server. Proton describes Secure Core locations in Switzerland, Iceland and Sweden, together with full-disk encryption and high-security data centers.
No-logs policy
Proton states that Proton VPN does not store browsing activity, session lengths or IP-address logs and says the policy has been independently audited.
See Proton VPN →Proton Mail
Proton Mail uses zero-access encryption for stored mailbox contents. Messages between Proton Mail users are end-to-end encrypted; messages to external providers depend on the recipient's provider and the chosen protection method.
See Proton Mail →Proton Pass
A strong password manager is a basic part of modern account security. Proton Pass extends the Proton privacy ecosystem to passwords, identities and secure account management.
See Proton Pass →Proton Drive
Proton Drive encrypts files on the device before they are uploaded and supports encrypted file sharing. That makes it a compelling option for documents, photos and personal files where provider-side access to plaintext is undesirable.
See Proton Drive →Proton Lumo
Proton positions Lumo as a privacy-first AI assistant. Proton states that chats are not used to train models, that saved conversations use zero-access encryption and that Lumo follows a no-logs approach.
See Proton Lumo →Proton Unlimited
Users who want several Proton services should also compare Proton Unlimited. Proton describes it as a bundle combining multiple premium services, including VPN Plus and Mail Plus; exact allowances should be checked before purchase.
See Proton Unlimited →What Proton does not solve
A VPN does not make you anonymous. Browser fingerprints, cookies, logged-in accounts and phishing remain important. Likewise, encrypted cloud storage cannot prevent a user from sharing a file with the wrong person. The strength of the Proton approach is therefore the combination of several privacy layers rather than a single magic switch.
My recommendation
For a first step, I would look at Proton VPN. Users who want a broader privacy setup should then consider Proton Mail, Proton Pass and Proton Drive. If several services are already needed, Proton Unlimited is worth comparing.
